How is pain transmitted ?
Pain pathway
Pain transmit from peripheral issue to the spinal cord to the thalamus to the cortex.
Receptor --> Spinal Cord --> Thalamus --> Cortex
Different classes of medications target pain at different sites along the pain transmission pathways.
Receptor : NSAID's, Local anesthetics
Spinal Cord : Opioids, Adrenergic agonists, Serotonin reuptake inhibitors, other drugs
Thalamus : Anticonvulsants, Serotonin reuptake inhibitors
Cortex : Anxiolytics, Hypnotic, Opioids, Pyschostimulants, Anticonvulsants.
