Neuobiolgoy of Pain

What is pain ?

Pain is a distinctly unpleasant sensation localized to a region of the body.

Physiologic pain serves a purpose and is actually protective, it warms the body of potentially damaging or destructive stimulus.

Neuropathic pain is pain that persists after an injury has healed or a disease has resolved. [when pain serve no purpose].

These are some of the neuropathic pain :

- referred pain : sensory input from skin and viscera coverage on single spinal neurons that transmit pain stimulus to the brain. Pain impulses from deep structure or organs are mislocalized to a region innervated by the same spinal segment (gall bladder to the right shoulder blade, heart to left arm or jaw).

- sensitization pain : lowered threshold for activation of nerve endings after repeated stimulation in injured or inflamed tissue.
