Background - Breakthrough – Procedural

Background
Exist on a 24hour basis
Best treated with ‘long-acting’ medication that are taken on a regular schedule throughout the day.

Break through
Pain that is flares up or ‘break through’ the regular medication used for background pain
Best treated with ‘short acting’ medication that works for a short periods of time

Procedural pain
Pain that occurs during wound care, physical therapy, or other necessary procedure.
Procedure pain medications are independent of medication used for background and breakthrough dosing and should be dosed according to expected pain needs of the patient and titrated throughout the procedure.
